STOP SMOKING: Your ability to stop smoking permanently depends upon a number of very important factors.

Question 1: Am I physically addicted?

 If you really can stop smoking by using willpower alone, you are one of the lucky ones. If not, then you may have a physical addiction to nicotine, which is why your previous attempts to stop smoking have created withdrawal symptoms. Part of the method that you choose to help you stop smoking must work on this physical level. 

Question 2: Am I psychologically addicted?

 If you reach for a cigarette with a cup of tea or coffee, if you light up after a meal or if you smoke more when you are socialising or drinking the answer is 'yes'. Part of the method that you choose to help you stop smoking must address this psychological habit.

 If you answered yes to question 1 & 2, you now know to permanently stop smoking; you need to address both the habit and the addiction! You are not alone. Tens of thousands of smokers are right there with you, finally question 3.

Question 3: Do I want to stop smoking?

 The question is not can I stop smoking, but do I want to stop smoking?  Uppermost in your mind must be the desire – that is, you want to stop smoking or you have at least one very good reason to stop smoking.  If the answer to this question is yes, then you are already half way there, and I can show you how to ‘make the switch’ from smoker to happy non-smoker.  If the answer is no, then the timing is not yet right for you! 

 The method that you use to stop smoking will also have a significant impact on your success.  If you fall into both categories, you need a method that tackles both categories with equal power. Anything less is like chopping the head off a weed but leaving the root to grow back.

 I have come across many different therapies to stop smoking that claimed to have very high success rates. The truth is often very different.

 However I use an approach to stop smoking which not only uses the most powerful hypnosis techniques, and the more up to date NLP techniques but also incorporates a behaviour modification programme.  Many of my clients using this method report that they are easily maintaining their ideal weight and some say they've even lost a little!  How great is that?

 There are 2 sessions each lasting about an hour and a simple 7-day behaviour modification programme to follow between the sessions and deals with both the habit and the addiction.

Dealing with Addiction – How it works.

Belief
 Constructing memories about the future holds the same power in your mind as those of real memories in your past. Your brain is able to access these new ‘memories’ to help you create decisions that are made below your conscious level of awareness; which is exactly how athletes improve their performance so efficiently.

Self Sabotage
 Believe it or not, all addictive behaviours have a positive intention behind them.  To uncover them and resolve them we may need to dig deep.  By removing the positive benefit of an addiction it then releases the struggle.  And when that conflict is resolved you are then able to make logical decisions.

Triggers
 Cravings are the result of powerful chemical reactions in your body that can sometimes remain a long time after the drug, behaviour or addictive stimuli has gone.  The triggers start a sequence of events in your brain that result in an unreasonable and illogical need to feed the addiction again.  Even when the substance has left the body the brain creates the effects and needs.  Remove the triggers and their instantaneous responses below conscious awareness and the addict then realises the effects of the anchors, positively.

Inner Truth
 Being in denial is food for an addiction, which is why we need to be brutally honest.  Your unconscious mind doesn’t have access to the reality of what is feeding the addiction, what the agenda is or what is needed to let it go.  By coming up with an inner truth in a private and self empowering way the addict can then, and only then, listen openly and realise that resistance is no longer an issue.

Commitment
 Every addict wants to stop doing what they do even though they understand there are terrible consequences of having the addiction.  They want more than ANYTHING to stop the addiction and keep to their promise but the internal conflicts stop them from keeping their commitment.  Removing and resolving those conflicts and then creating the power of an unconscious switch in their minds allows them to stay committed.

De-hypnotizing
 There is power in the AA 12 step process but only in that it promotes failure.  By getting you to believe that you are powerless and diseased keeps you on the verge of relapse.  Being surrounded by failures and others who are struggling will only compound the problem.  Immersing yourself in misery and pain will only further the belief that addiction is hard to get over.

Choice and Freedom
 Hypnotherapy creates new pathways in the brain which stimulate its responses for success.  The biological reaction of these newly formed memories creates a positive chemical response that affects things at the cellular level by changing the receptors in the cells.  This is how the brain and body then make the change to that of a non-addicted person.

Brain regions link asthma and emotions

 Psychological stress has been shown to have an effect on asthma flare-ups, and now the brain regions that appear to be responsible for this interaction have been identified, according to US researchers.

 As reported in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, Dr. Richard J. Davidson, from the University of Wisconsin at Madison, and colleagues used functional MRI -- that is, MRI scans that show activity as well as anatomical structures -- to determine the brain regions linking emotions with asthma flare-ups.

 In the study, six patients with mild asthma were exposed to ragweed or dust-mite extracts. The subjects were shown three different categories of words: asthma-related (e.g., "wheeze"), non-asthma negative ("loneliness") or neutral ("curtains").

 Two brain regions, the anterior cingulate cortex and insula, showed increased activity when the asthma-related words were heard compared with the other types. Moreover, this enhanced activity was specifically linked to physiologic signals from the ragweed and dust-mite extracts.

 "In individuals with asthma and other stress-related conditions, these brain regions may be hyperresponsive to disease-specific emotional and ... physiologic signals," which may contribute to problems that worsen the asthma, such as inflammation, the researchers conclude.  SOURCE: Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, August 29th online edition, 2005.

Once you start to use hypnosis, kinesiology, NLP, EmoTrance, Freeway CER, 3D Mind and EFT, most people find that they somehow feel more in control of their lives. 

 Accordingly, you cannot be made to do anything that you do not want to do, or that goes against your moral and value systems.  Hypnotherapy is all about co-operation, between the conscious and sub-conscious parts of the mind.  While hypnotized, you know perfectly well what you are doing and saying and are in control of what suggestions you want to accept.

 Anyone who has intelligence, imagination and the ability to concentrate can be hypnotized.  With that in mind, hypnosis would not be suitable for very young children.  (EFT and EmoTrance though, are very easy for children to use.)

Do not make an appointment for hypnotherapy if you suffer from epilepsy or clinical depression.  It is NOT a substitute for medical or psychiatric treatment.  If in doubt, consult your doctor.  However, other treatments are very effective with or for these conditions.

Smoking worsens alcohol-related mental deficits

 The poorer mental function seen among alcoholics, many of whom also regularly smoke cigarettes, may be partially due to the long-term effects of nicotine, new research suggests.

 "People who are also smokers are at a much higher risk," Dr. Jennifer M. Glass, of the University of Michigan's Addiction Research Center, told Reuters Health.

 In her study, "cigarette smoking was negatively related to IQ and thinking," she said.

 This finding may seem counterintuitive, since many smokers attest to feeling more alert and focused after smoking. Indeed, research shows that improved mental functioning is one of the immediate effects of nicotine exposure. Chronic smoking, however, is known to have the opposite effect.

 Studies show that up to 87 percent of alcoholics smoke cigarettes, compared to less than 30 percent of the general United States population. Yet, few studies have looked into cigarette smoking as a factor that might explain the cognitive deficits reported among alcoholics.

 To investigate that association, Glass and her colleagues examined brain function among 172 men from the same community, including 103 men who abused alcohol.

 The team found that men with higher scores on the lifetime alcohol problems scale (LAPS) and those who reported a higher number of pack-years of smoking (i.e. packs of cigarettes smoked per day times number of years) both had lower IQ scores and lower scores on a test of global proficiency.

 The proficiency test took into account the speed and accuracy with which the men were able to perform on a battery of tests including those that measured short-term memory, verbal reasoning and mathematical reasoning.

 Upon further investigation, the researchers found that smoking predicted poorer global proficiency even more strongly than alcoholism did. Their findings were published online before publication in Drug and Alcohol Dependence.

 Smoking also appeared to be independently associated with weaker verbal and visual-spatial reasoning, the study indicates.

 Thus, though smoking did not account for all of the decreased neurocognitive functioning observed among the alcohol abusers, it did seem to account for some of the effects, the report indicates.

 The reason for the observed associations is unknown, and the researchers did not investigate the "cause and effect story," Glass said, but she speculated that the diminished cognitive ability among smokers may be partly due to some mechanism involving a restricted flow of blood and oxygen to the brain.

 Based on the current report, Glass said, "if you need another reason to quit smoking, it's a good potential one to add to the list."

Rising Above Fear; Living from Courage.

 Here is an article from a colleague in the states with some tips and insights to overcome fearful thoughts and emotional states that cause you to contract from others and from your own sense of resourcefulness and joy: 

1) Leap! Liberation and empowerment always come dressed in paradox. If you find yourself contracting and holding back and holding on, don't spend time stewing. Just give! Give your money, give your time, give your attention to others (especially outside your family). Disregard the fearful objecting thoughts of lack and limitation and just do it.  

2) Make giving a regular part of your life, daily or weekly is best. Fight for cheerfulness; dismiss shyness or moodiness and practice friendliness. No effort at kindness is too small! 

3) Master your (fearful) mind! This is easier to do when you understand in a vivid, on-the-spot way, the difference between imagination, and perception, and the nature of causality. 

Perception doesn't cause anything! It is just raw data. For example, receiving a pink slip, or perceiving the imagination that you are about to, doesn't cause anything. In other words, you do not have to feel afraid. Fear isn't caused by perception of an outer event or an inner event (thoughts and imaginations). Fear is caused when you move from perception to imagination of consequence (thinking things will only get worse) to conviction that you can't handle the consequence and nothing good can come of it (you're screwed!).

That "move from" moment is the on-the-spot moment of choice. Instead of choosing fearful thinking and imagining, you have a choice to move from perception to imagining yourself to be someone you value, and will stand by, and encourage in the process of imagining constructive actions you can take to deal with the perceived event.

No put downs, including complaining, which is a disguised put down! How is complaining a put down? In order to complain, you first have to judge yourself not good enough or smart enough to handle the challenge.   It may not seem to you that it is just as easy to imagine positive consequences as negative ones, but that is just a function of habit. You can practice imagining positive constructive outcomes and you can practice brainstorming the means to accomplish them. 

Inspiration to create this new habit of constructive imagining and brainstorming increases easily when you realize that fearful thinking, and its resulting contracted mental and emotional states, are never required (according to the law of causality) and they never help!  It is always a mistake to choose to give in to fearful thinking. If you take some time to focus on this fact so that you really develop confidence in it, you will readily arouse your aggressive energy to reject fearful thinking and replace it with creative thinking. 

Here is an example of how one person chose to trust the paradoxical nature of liberation and empowerment.

Many years ago a very successful man shared what he said was his primary secret to success. He said simply, "Whatever direction fear told me to go in, I went in the opposite direction. That made all the difference."
